ya!!! Water temperatures being recorded above freezing? The water is free at last!!! Today was a balmy ~50F and in the course of several hours, the major ice jams near the bridges and dam completely broke up and traveled down river. While the river is running high (as it normally does in the Spring), and there are still a few large ice chunks floating down the river, the river is basically free to kayak! The major limiter right now is ice stuck on the shore at the boat ramps. Given our forecast, however, I expect these to be cleared up within a few days when we start getting into the 60s.
The bleakness of winter is finally drawing to a close. I took the opportunity today to bike the majority of the greenway between the 2 pedestrian bridges ~10mi? despite the strong wind out of the north. I'll probably start riding into work now as much as possible. Save some gas $$ and it's exercise to boot.
In other news, I went to my first curling match the other day at the last draw for the Men's world championship. Pretty sweet. I got free rain all over the arena with my camera so I shot nearly ~2.6 GB of photos. Overall, I was happy with the results. Thank the excellent quality of the arena lighting!
We also held a party this weekend for Becky who recently (successfully) defended her MS thesis. Good times were had by all, Rona even became the first person to be crowd surfed in the dining room! Stay tuned for round 2 in two weeks for the after-banquet party.
On the work/job front...
The first check finally showed up for my second calendar sale. Four pictures will be featured in this. I should be getting another check for four more thumbnails that will be in the 2009 Weather calendar. Glad to see my photo is good enough for advertising ... too bad that picture won't be on the cover. Now we just need the qual to finish (regardless of the outcome) and get some storms so I can built up the portfolio some more.
For the actual job... things are busy. As I was afraid, the workload is piling on this semester. While this normally isn't an issue, I have a qualifying exam to be preparing for. Too many semester projects and still trying to wrap up some research/figures for a paper are spreading my time thin. While it sounds like I've been busy "playing" (see above), that's about all I've mustered in the past few weeks. Ask Jimmie... she knows I've been busy. I still manage to get some studying done every other day or so for a few hours. It seems like whenever I study one item, something else gets pushed out, however.
